What is the AIP Paleo Diet?



AIP stands for Autoimmune Protocol. This diet is relatively new and was developed to decrease inflammation in the body, particularly for those suffering from autoimmune conditions. It also claims to help heal an individual's gut, specifically those with leaky gut and gut dysbiosis.


Why is "paleo" added to the end? You may hear it referred to as just AIP or AIP Paleo Diet because it follows similar principles to a paleo diet but is a little more strict.


The foods that you must eliminate are (1):

  • legumes

  • grains

  • soy

  • dairy

  • sugar

  • seed oils

  • eggs

  • gum

  • nightshades

  • coffee

  • chocolate

  • some spices (cumin and coriander)

  • nuts and seeds


As you can see there are lot of foods you cannot eat on this list and some which are typically in a paleo diet such as eggs and nuts.


The foods that you can eat are (1):

  • coconut products

  • dairy-free fermented foods

  • sugar-free vinegar

  • small amounts of honey or maple

  • gelatin (from grass-fed beef)

  • arrowroot starch

  • vegetables with the exception of nightshades

  • meats

  • seafood

  • olive oil

  • herbs


Final Thoughts


This is a strict diet that can be challenging to follow. Since it is a controversial diet, it is important that you do plenty of research and speak to your MD and holistic practitioners before determining whether or not it's right for you. It could, however, be good to regulate hormones, regulate your immune system, and support gut health!
