Eczema & Psoriasis Nutrition 101


Having any type of skin problem can be mentally draining and physically uncomfortable. Because skin issues can been seen on the outside, people often feel very self conscious. Two relatively common skin conditions are eczema and psoriasis. They often times get grouped together but its important to note that they are different and have specific protocols. However, these two conditions are not pleasant for many people and it can be frustrating for people to find ways to improve their conditions. Remember, our skin is our largest organ so we need to treat it well on both the outside but also through nourishing our bodies.

Psoriasis Psoriasis is actually an autoimmune disease and is typically characterized by "scaling" of the skin because skin cells are turning over too fast. Other common symptoms include dandruff, lesions, cracked and bruised skin, and nail fungus and can appear on the scalp, back, face, palms, legs, elbows and more. Little to people know that psoriasis can actually lead to worsening health conditions down the road like joint inflammation! So the immune system definitely plays a role but what else causes psoriasis. Some research as pointed to digestive issues and diet, stress, genetics, changes in hormones, just to name a few.

From those causes it may become a bit more clear on what a nutrition protocol may include. In order to support digestion, eating probiotic rich foods like sauerkraut, kefir, and kombucha may be helpful. Fiber rich foods and drinking lots of water may also beneficial. Vitamin D deficiency has also been linked to psoriasis so supplementation may be needed. Antioxidants are also important to incorporate into your diet. This includes vitamin A for repairing skin and zinc for skin health and pain management. Lastly, it may be worth considering increasing omega-3 fatty acids in your diet through food and/or supplementation.



Eczema Eczema is typically characterized by scaly, dry and itchy skin. Eczema can be hard to determine, because it can have some similarities to psoriasis. Age, genetics, nutrition, allergies, stress and immunity are just some of the factors that may contribute to eczema. There are a few things you can do like moisturize and try certain topical applications but nutrition also plays a role in eczema. When thinking about eczema you may want to consider incorporating anti-inflammatory foods like omega-3 fatty acids. This includes salmon, walnuts, hemp seeds, and more! Probiotics are also beneficial especially is someone is also experiencing foods sensitivities and intestinal permeability. Healthy fats in general are also beneficial such as avocado, nuts, seeds and oils.

Like psoriasis adequate levels of vitamin D is important. Of course being in Canada, it can be hard to get enough during the colder months but there are foods like eggs and salmon that contain vitamin D or you could consider supplementation. Vitamin E may also be helpful since it helps with inflammation in the skin.

Digestion may also be a key consideration. What is happening on the outside is typically an indication of what is happening within out body. Hence why skin, hair and nail health have been looked at for years to determine imbalances in our health. You may want to consider food sensitivity testing if you are prone to digestive upsets.
