Collagen is another one of those health foods that seems to be trending in 2017/2018 but many people still don't really know what it is and how it may be beneficial to your health. I am going to break it down for you super simple so you can decide whether or not you want to jump on the collagen bandwagon.
What is is? Collagen is a protein. It is made up of beneficial proteins such as glycine, arginine and proline. Interestingly enough, it is found in the connective tissue of animals. Although it is the most abundant protein in our bodies, our collagen production begins to decline as we age and thats when we start to see wrinkles and joint pain.
What are the benefits? Although there is still a lot of research that needs to be done on this topic, people use collagen to support the following things:
muscles - increase mass and muscle repair
gut health - help support lining in gastrointestinal tact
joints - improve stiffness
energy - boost energy
skin - have you ever noticed it as a skincare ingredients?! Can help with wrinkles, elasticity, repair and smoothness
hair, nails and teeth - strengthens
What are the different types? The most well known type of collagen is beef collagen also referred to as bovine collagen but there is also chicken collagen, fish collagen (also common), and others.
How do I use it? Collagen doesn't really have a taste. It blends really well into smoothies, shakes and lattes. You can also add it to baking recipes, pancakes, jellos and more!
