Setting Goals and Staying Accountable

Sometimes the most important thing we forget to do is set realistic and specific goals.

Sure I want you to set your goals high and "feel good", "get fit", "eat healthy" but without specifics, these big and broad goals can fall short.

When working with clients I want to ensure their goals are S.M.A.R.T.

This means:

S - Smart

M - Measurable

A - Attainable

R - Relevant

T - Time Bound

Think about it. How are you able to really know if you achieved your goal if you don't set parameters around it and get clear as to WHY you have a particular goal.

Think about why you want to achieve this goal and what is motivating you. Do you want to increase your energy so you can play with your kids more? Do you want to decrease bloat and gas so you can enjoy foods more. Do you want to decrease muscle tension so that everyday tasks become easier?

Take 5-10 minutes and follow these steps for each of your goals.

Now that you have done that it's time to think about how you are going to get there. There are lots of things you can do in terms of a specific goal. If its losing 10 lbs in 3 months then you can eat and exercise a certain way, if its increase energy levels by a certain time then it may include drinking more water, getting bloodwork done, taking supplements, sleeping more, etc.

Now that is all fine and dandy but I don't know about you, when it comes to setting a new goal it can be equally exciting as overwhelming. And this is where accountability comes into play.

Accountability can come in different forms. Perhaps it's keeping yourself accountable by keeping a wellness journal and tracking your progress. Or maybe it's setting goals with your partner and encouraging each other along the way. Or maybe its a co-worker, friend or even online community. No matter who or what it is, it's great to have someone there to make the process more fun and less lonely.
