Highlight on Berries

Who doesn't love local berries in thee summer months or even frozen berries in a smoothie?! I could personally eat berries all the time but I try to only eat fresh berries when they are in season.

Today I am going to feature three of the most popular berries which are strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.

Strawberries contain high levels of vitamin C, manganese, fibre and other important nutrients. Their high vitamin C content makes them a great antioxidant to incorporate into your diet.

Blueberries are one of my favourites and are great frozen when added to smoothies. They contain high levels of vitamin K, manganese, vitamin C, and fibre. They contain high levels of phytonutrients making them a antioxidant powerhouse!

Raspberries are high in vitamin C, manganese, fibre, copper, vitamin K and other key nutrients. Similar to other berries, they contain high levels of anti-inflammatory phytonutrients that promote long-term health.

Local Berries

In Ontario you can find these berries in season during:

Strawberries: May-October however you can get greenhouse grown throughout the year

Blueberries: July-September

Raspberries: July-October

Pro Tip: Buy fresh berries in bulk in season and freeze the remainder so you can enjoy them later into the year!

It seems like there are endless possibilities when cooking with berries. Add them to your oats, yogurt, pancakes, or chia pudding in the morning, blend into a smoothie, add to a salad, and bake them into your favourite desserts!
