The Pill Series Part 2: How the pill impacts your gut and thyroid

If you have been following along so far, you may have noticed that I mentioned the pill in relation to gut health.

It may seem strange that the two are related, but let me break it down for you!

How Does the Pill Impact Gut Health?

  • The pill disrupts your gut microbiome and can increase the growth of BAD bacteria
  • The pill may cause inflammation in the gut
  • The pill may impact your immune system (which is largely found in your digestive tract)

Furthermore, this may lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as:

  • bloating and gas
  • irregular bowel movements
  • leaky gut / intestinal permeability
  • multiple food sensitivities
  • poor skin health
  • among other symptoms

How Can I Support My Gut Health?

  • L-Glutamine
  • Fermented Foods (if you have SIBO, this could exacerbate your symptoms)
  • Zinc
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids
  • Vitamin D
  • Probiotic
  • N-Acetylcysteine
  • Digestive Enzyme
  • Stress Management
  • Sleep

How it impacts your thyroid:

  1. too much estrogen as a result of taking the pill can increase "the inflammatory process of your immune system and contribute to the attack on your thyroid"
  2. it can increase "thyroid-binding-globulin, which binds your free thyroid hormone so you can't use it"
  3. if your gut has been impacted by taking the pill (see part 3), then your thyroid may be impacted as gut and thyroid health are closely linked. Are you starting to see how these body systems and functions are so closely connected?
  4. the pill depletes key nutrients which are needed for thyroid hormones such as selenium, zinc and B vitamins
