Mainstream Deodorant's Hidden Chemicals & Why You Need to Switch to Non-Toxic

Did you know that your deodorant is full of nasty chemicals that may be impacting your short and long-term health?

Companies are great at marketing deodorant to us which makes us think we need to have strongly scented deodorant in order to avoid body odor. Even from a young age, we are given horribly scented vanilla or floral deodorants that may be disrupting our hormones, among other things.

What they don't tell you is that these deodorants are highly toxic and should not be applied to the skin, especially places like your armpits which are close to lymph nodes and breasts.

Our skin is also our largest organ so anything that we put on our skin gets absorbed into our bloodstream...no thanks!

The problem is not just deodorant (although that's a key one) but also all the other chemicals and toxins that we are absorbing and consuming throughout the day via air, food, cleaning products, and personal care products. This all accumulates over a day, week, month, and lifetime that can lead to toxin overload.

Here are some common chemicals to look out for in your deodorant:

  • aluminum
  • triclosan
  • phthalates
  • parabens
  • propylene glycol
  • and these are just some of the main ones which don't include potential artificial scents and colours

The toxic chemicals can impact your body in the following ways:

  • it can irritate your skin
  • overload the liver
  • cause or contribute to hormonal imbalances. Some chemicals, particularly xenoestrogens can mimic estrogen in the body and lead to estrogen dominance and hormone imbalances.
  • linked to health issues including headaches, allergies, ADHD, and asthma
  • links to more serious diseases such as cancer and Alzheimers. Studies have looked at the link of certain chemicals such as parabens to breast cancer and although studies have not made a direct correlation there is a lot of research looking at parabens and other chemicals and their link to breast cancer and other forms of cancer. This is partly to do with the hormone imbalances mentioned above but also because many chemicals found in personal care products are considered carcinogens such as triclosan.

Although there still needs to be a lot of research in this space and direct links to these ingredients to chronic illnesses, there is definitely some interesting work that has been done in this space.

I think we can all agree that its not necessarily healthy to be putting ingredients classified as carcinogens on our skin, especially our armpits so why do we all still use toxic deodorants? I will say that natural options tend to come at a higher price but you may also not need to use them as much and most people give up on their natural deo only after a couple of tries.

Why is that? Your body is believed to go through a detoxification process when you stop using toxic deodorant and this is where most people give up on natural options. People believe they don't work because their body odor gets worse. This is completely normal but only temporary. Although we all have different body odor and some people are naturally stronger than others, the smell from detoxing is bound to happen the best of us.

Luckily brands like Routine are fantastic because they have ones with maximum baking soda for maximum strength and some without for those with sensitive pits. You may also be wondering why their deodorant comes in a paste. Well, they do have stick forms now BUT the paste option can actually help with body odor. Assuming you wash your hands before each application means there are fewer bacteria in the jar versus a stick of deodorant which we may apply throughout the day when we haven't showered. Just another reason to get behind the natural deodorant bandwagon!
